Gawad Kalinga (GK) means "to give care" in Tagalog.
GK is a Philippines-based organization that has worked to establish sustainable communities for the impoverished since 2003. These communities provide the shelter and education necessary to restore dignity and partner with the poor. Job training harnesses untapped entrepreneurial potential by offering resources to form social businesses. GK takes a holistic approach to ending the poverty cycle by empowering the individual through value formation, which is the reason our charity succeeds in its mission.
Gawad Kalinga at SAS has two annual trips to the Philippines. We also organise several fundraising events. Annually, the school-wide GK Zombie Run involves 700 runners and over 100 high school students in collaboration with four different clubs.
In April 2018, the club raised enough money to reach our goal, seven years in the making: to build our own SAS Village. In November of 2018, we broke ground on our dream village.
The club's end goal for the SAS Village is self-sustainability. In addition to building houses, to reach this goal, we hope to develop facilities, education, and entrepreneurial opportunities at the village.
